Make Mum a Lavender Wand
Hi!
I know it varies between countries, but for many of us, Mother’s Day is this weekend, and what better reason than that, to make something pretty. Gift it if you like, or make and keep for yourself, and once you’ve seen just how easy they are to make, I’ll bet you’ll be hanging onto a few of these gorgeous Lavender Wands too!
These smell and look fantastic, (and make a beautiful gift when paired with our Quilted PJ’s Pouch too.)
So, all you will need to make lavender wands is fresh lavender and thin ribbon.
Gather some lavender with long stems.
Odd numbers will work best. Three is probably too few, but something like 5-7 stems will work best.
Cut a long length of thin ribbon (approx. 1 metre/yard).
Tie the lavender together just under the flowers, with your ribbon. Knot it.
Leave one end of the ribbon fairly short (about 8 inches), and you will use the long end for the weaving.
Fold back the stems over the flowers to form a basket. Try to keep them reasonably evenly spaced.
The short end of the ribbon stays on the inside with the flowers.
Fresh lavender stems will bend without breaking.
Using the long end of the ribbon, weave through the stems, over and under, working your way from the top down in a woven spiral.
Keep the ribbon fairly close to the previous row, and keep it fairly tight if you can.
When you have finished weaving the basket around the flower heads, tie and knot off again with both ends of the ribbon.
You may choose the leave the stems bare. Trim the ends neatly, tie a ribbon bow and trim the ribbon to finish.
You may choose to finish the wand by binding the stems too.
Use the long ribbon and wind the ribbon around the stems to the end, then wind back around to meet up with the other end of the ribbon just under the flowers.
Tie, knot and make a bow to finish.
Note – do this as tightly as you can, as when the lavender dries it shrinks, and your ribbon will loosen. You may like to weave the first part around the flowers, then leave it to dry before finishing the stems.
If you’d like to pair your Lavender Wands with a beautiful quilted pyjama pouch, you can find our pattern here at the Quilt Pattern Library too. This really does make a special gift, (or treat for yourself).
Enjoy Mother’s Day!
